Chrisette Michele Receives Backlash For Her Inaugural Performance

Almost a week after inauguration and R&B singer Chrisette Michelle is still receiving backlash. Not only from the general public, but from major people in the industry and her own family.

In an interview after one of the most memorable days in history, Chrisette said, “I thought that it was almost my responsibility to not just say yes but to say yes with purpose, so that was my reasoning. And no, I didn’t think twice about it.” Then, to her surprise she was ridiculed by close to everyone.

Her extended family has even disowned her for the inaugural performance, refusing to even speak to her immediate family for supporting her. That’s the backlash she feels the most, yet many others have spoken out against her.

Spike Lee has refused to include her song in his Netflix series reboot “She’s Got To Have It.” Taking to Instagram to tell his viewers her choosing to perform was sad and he won’t be using her song “Black Girl Magic.”

To make things worse, she didn’t even meet Trump. At her last presidential performance, she went after Obama’s speech and was greeted on stage by Barack himself. That wasn’t the case this time. Last minute the schedule was changed and she was asked to perform before the new president.

Chrisette said in an interview following the event, “And the woman who organized the event came and told me, ‘Now you’re going to go first and he’s going to go after you.’ I looked her in the eye and said, ‘My family has disowned me. If you decide to Google me, you’ll see that America is writing about me in their newspapers. I’m the black poster child for discord right now, and he’s not going to shake my hand?’ So no, I didn’t get to meet him.”

She also admitted to not voting for Trump. She defended her choice to perform saying it was for a cause, to speak for the voiceless. That was also the reasoning behind performing for less than her average compensation, yet has not revealed how much she actually made.

Everyone isn’t against this artist though. India.Arie stood up for the singer saying although she would have NEVER performed, we should spread love and not ridicule her decision.
